Set Up Koken for Shared Hosting

Koken is a free website publishing system developed for photographers, designers and creative DIYs.

Prep the System for Koken

  1. Download the latest version of Koken from the website at http://www.koken.me

  2. Log in to your cPanelcPanel account

  3. Create a database using MySQL Database Wizard
    Note: write down the database name for future use

  4. Create a database user
    Note: write down the database user name for future use

  5. Add a user to the database, selecting All Privileges to apply to that user when presented

  6. Complete this task and save

    Once the user has been added to the database you will receive confirmation that user cPanelname_username' was added to the database 'cPanelname_databasenam'

Implement Koken

  1. Unzip the Koken file on your computer an

  2. Upload the index.php file from the folder to your /public_html or /public_html/domainname/ (if you are install it on an add-on domain or sudomain) using an FTP program
    Note: you can also do this from within your cPanel's File Manager) 

  3. Open your browser and navigate to http://yourdomain.com/index.php (or the path to the subdomain)

  4. When the Server Test Page loads click the orange Begin Installation button

    You will be presented with the following options to complete:
    Setup User (admin info for the installation) - add your first name, last name, email address and password (the email address and password will be your admin login)
    Hostname (localhost)
    Database Name (database name you created in cPanel) - including the prefix and underscore, like 'cPanelname_databasename'
    Username (database username you created in cPanel) - including the prefix and underscore, like 'cPanelname_username'
    Password (password for the database username you created in cPanel)
    Time Zone
    Subscribe (select yes or no)
    Subscribe (yes or no) your choice and then click "Download and install"

  5. Click Download and Install

  6. Once installation completes you can log in to Koken using the email address and password which you specified during setup

In the future you will login to Koken at http://yourdomain.com/admin.
